Video techniques and influences
Camera shots: Establishing shot out of focus then into focus great for effect and almost acts as a fade in. Depth of field. Over the shoulder shot
Camera Movements: High angle rotation, Lift the tripod on the camera and spin round almost like its from a podium or its from a vehicle. Hand held shot. Panning from side to side Almost like a shot reverse shot or like the camera is like a person looking around point of view from a spectator.
Camera angles: Classic Dutch tilt (not too much as it will ruin the filming all together). Upwards tilt.

what makes a good music product
The
underlying idea behind the model is that people are motivated by a desire to
fulfil, or gratify certain needs. So rather than asking how the media uses us,
the model asks how we use the media.
The
model is broken down into four different needs.Surveillance: The surveillance need is based around the idea that people feel better having the feeling that they know what is going on in the world around them. (we watch the news as we feel it is a reliable source of information and it makes us feel secure that we know what is happening around us). The surveillance model is all about awareness. We use the mass media to be more aware of the world, gratifying a desire for knowledge and security.
Personal Identity: The personal identity need explains how being a subject of the media allows us to confirm the identity and positioning of ourselves within society. The use of the media for forming personal identity can be seen in music videos/films. Pop stars can often become big role models, inspiring young children everywhere (which is why there's such an outcry when one of them does something wrong).
Personal Relationships: We can form a relationship with the media, and also use the media to form a relationship with others. Many people use the television as a form of companionship. This may seem sad, but think about how many times you've watched the TV on your own, or with other people but sitting in silence. The television is often quite an intimate experience, and by watching the same people on a regular basis we can often feel very close to them, as if we even know them. When presenters or characters in a soap die, those who have watched that person a lot often grieve for the character, as if they have lost a friend. Another aspect to the personal relationships model is how we can sometimes use the media as a springboard to form and build upon relationships with real people.Having a favourite TV programme in common can often be the start of a conversation, and can even make talking to strangers that much easier.
Some studies suggest that some families use sitting around watching the television as a stimulus for conversation, talking to each other about the programme or related anecdotes while it is.
DiversionThe diversion need describes what's commonly termed as escapism - watching the television so we can forget about our own lives and problems for a while and think about something else. We watch music videos to take our mind off our every day lives, we want to distract our self from the problems we are experiencing. We want to see that people experience the same feelings as we do and want to forget about our own problems and focus on some one else's.

naritive theroy (notes)
Levi Strauss (1958) - suggested that narrative structure
depends upon binary oppositions e.g. good vs. bad, dark vs. light. If one half
of a binary is at work in a film text, then the other must be present in order
to define it and vice versa.
John Berger (1972) -
now classic article "Ways of Seeing" (1972) revolutionary, for
his time, analyses the manner in which men and women are culturally
represented, and the subsequent results these representations have on their
conduct and self as well and mutual perception.
Laura Mulvey (1975) - Male gaze theory, this can be looked
at in three ways. How men look at women, How women look at themselves, How
women look at other women
Tessa Perkins (1979) - There are many examples of
stereotypes that aren't always negative, however some of them carry what may be
seen as negative points from some people’s points of views.
Richard Dyer (1983) - star theory is the idea that icons and
celebrities are manufactured by institutions for financial gain. He believes
that stars are constructed to represent 'real people' experiencing real
emotions. Stars are manufactured by the music industry to serve a purpose; to
make money out of audience, who respond to various elements of a star’s
personality by buying records and becoming fans.
Paul Willis (1990) - Punk rock finally challenged,
de-constructed and exposed the mythologies of rock at the very moment when the
original teenagers and youth of the rock generation were beginning to grow old
and beginning to hear things in a different way: songs of generational
rebellion, sexual liberation and social concern were starting to be used to
advertise wine coolers, executive cars and personal insurance
Tim O’Sullivan (1998) - refers to a set of ideas which
produces a partial and selective view of reality. Notion of ideology entails
widely held ideas or beliefs which are seen as common sense and become
naturalised
Julian McDougall (2009) - He is often
controversial, McDougall explores issues in education, and calls on educators
to abandon prejudices and engage with what students are already actually doing
with new media forms. He advocates a shift away from students viewing cultural
products as texts to a view where even video games need analysis, explanation
and research. In this way, he is very much an advocate of exploring new and
less traditional forms of literacy, as well as analysing the relationship
between new media and post modern theories• He believes it is harder to
perceive a media audience as a stable, identifiable Tuesday, 4 November 2014

3 initial ideas for my narrative
Idea 1
First idea I came up for my narrative is to do with sport which is how i discovered the song in the first place. For example a football team struggling with performance and end up developing, the narrative would rise with the pace of the song as it starts slow and then an action packed finale. This would be relatable to the audience of the music video as most people know how it feels like to struggle in a team and end up developing and succeeding. However this isn't a narrative that would go well with the audience of the genre of music, as that kind of audience does not like or have any intrest in sport, and the song has nothing to do with sport. (influences include NHL 12 where the song also features, being an example of cross media convergence)
Idea 2
Second would be having no Narrative or story at all, so what would feature in the video would be whats considered an artistic video. This would include bizarre imagery cross cutting with the band performing in the video at night. This would be good because it goes with the genre of the music as the themes of music videos that go with this genre and the audience of the genre "appreciate" these kind of videos as there only interests are the band and nothing else other than that.
Idea 3
And my third idea for a music video would be your typical love story where the guy sits in the dark and see many girls pass by but then have that one girl stand out getting abused so he stops it and stops the guy abusing her she tries to stop him however and the main protagonist shows his love but the girl then wants none of it living anger and rage for the protagonist and he takes his anger out on the couple. This would not be a good choice of narrative because this is not a love song and the form of the video doesn't go with the song either. Sure it doesn't have to, but to make it a good video, it must have some relation to the narrative.

music video lyrics (analysed)
Middle class rut- busy bein born
The days keep dragging on - modern life where days go by fast and things go by quickly.
Those rats keep pushing on, woah - An expression referring to the rat race in the modern world that people rush and scavenge to survive in this world. slang term "woah"
The slowest race around - Contradiction as so many people rush in the world but so many people rushing to survive it actually makes a slow race mentally.
We all just race around, woah - worlds populations in the "rat race" so we all just rac around in this rat race. Slang term "woah"
And when the hope's gone the weight falls on me - Centre of trouble and always has the trouble or sad feelings always fall on him.
Yeah, when I'm gone, the weight falls on me - Reapitng
No sense in signing up - Whats the point in conforming
You're names already in - People make decisions for you anyways
Go ahead, yea, fuck it up, - Depressing thought that you fail at everything
The next guy pays for it - Replacement sorts it out saying their better
'Cuz what I get ain't half of what I give
and half don't suit me anyway - Unfair working more than what paid for
'Cuz what I get ain't half of what I give
and half don't suit me anyway - Repeated message
Maybe I sacrifice to feel like I'm alive - questioning self harm
Penniless… it’s all the same - Depression is like poverty
At least I'll die with a name - All he has left is his name
I ain't dead yet! - Contradiction to the message. Argument with himself or "the haters"
Give it back! - Give back my life
Or I’ll take it! - Or there will be a retaliation
Give it back! - Short sentence as a yell or a shout
Or I’ll take it! - Rhetorical interrogative
Or I’ll take it! - Repeated message
Maybe I sacrifice to feel like I'm alive - Repetition
Penniless… it’s all the same -
At least I'll die with a name
Maybe I sacrifice to feel like I'm alive
Penniless… it’s all the same
At least I'll die with a name
Give it back!
Or I’ll take it!
Give it back!
Or I’ll take it!
And when the hope's gone - repetition but with a different vibe to the start of the song
The weight falls on me
Yeah, when I'm gone
The weight falls on me
And when the hope's gone
The weight falls on me
Yeah, when I'm gone

music video idea
The song I chosen is middle class rut - Busy Bein Born
The reason i chose this song was because this song was in 2011, came 26th in the billboard hot 100 alternative songs and was 47th in hot 100 rock songs as well. This being the reason that the song stood out in my mind as it was a song that is not popular in the charts and it didn't have a multi million doller budget, and I found the song on a sports game (NHL 12. Being an example of cross media convergence) so thats a reason for wanting a sports themed narrative. However the music video of the song follows themes like slavery and child abuse so it is very dark so the genre of the song is more towards heavy metal genre so the narrative of the video needs to be dark as well which made me think to film my video at night.
